Each rug listed on our site is either a wool pile on a cotton foundation or a wool pile on a wool foundation. Quality, unrefined wool contains a substance called lanolin. Lanolin tends to have a natural smell, which many compare to the smell of sheep – or almost metallic-y, but sweet and grassy.
